Let's take a look at the statistics of home burglaries in France for the year 2023. As technical people, it's both interesting and useful for us to know the numbers and percentages.
Burglary statistics in France 2023.
In 2023, 217,100 burglaries of primary and secondary residences were recorded in France by the national police and gendarmerie, with 99% of victims related to primary residences. This data comes from the statistical database of offenses recorded by the Ministerial Statistical Service for Internal Security (SSMSI). The statistics include both successful burglaries and attempts.
Types of burglaries:
The housing burglary indicator combines burglaries of primary residences (index 27) and secondary residences (index 28) as both types of offenses involve similar methods. Burglaries of residences account for about two-thirds of all recorded burglary offenses. Other types of burglaries include:
Burglaries of industrial, commercial, or financial premises (index 29),
Burglaries of other locations (index 30).
In 2023, there were 74,000 burglaries of industrial, commercial, or financial premises and 46,000 burglaries of other locations.
Upward trend:
In 2023, housing burglaries increased by 3% compared to 2022, continuing the upward trend (+11% in 2022) after stabilizing in 2021 and a sharp drop of 20% in 2020, a year marked by the COVID-19 crisis. Burglaries of industrial, commercial, and financial premises also rose by 14% in 2023, with part of this increase attributed to the urban riots in the summer, during which this type of offense tripled.
Geographical distribution:
Burglaries are more frequent in large cities. In 2023, an average of 5.9 burglaries per 1,000 homes were recorded in France. This rate is higher in cities with populations between 100,000 and 200,000 (5.5 per 1,000), reaching 7.8 burglaries per 1,000 homes in very large cities, including Paris. Outside urban areas, the rate is lower, at 4.1 burglaries per 1,000 homes. Thus, large cities experience about twice as many burglaries as rural areas.
The national average burglary rate in metropolitan France (5.9 per 1,000) is higher than that observed in the overseas departments and regions (DROM), which is 4.3 per 1,000.
Victims of burglaries:
In 2023, 218,200 people were victims of burglaries of primary or secondary residences, which corresponds to nearly 4 victims per 1,000 inhabitants. The main victims are adults over 25 years old, and the risk increases with age. The victimization rate is 3.5 per 1,000 for people aged 25 to 29, and 4.7 per 1,000 for people aged 70 to 74. This is due to young adults gaining residential independence and older individuals accumulating assets, including secondary residences.
The majority of victims are French nationals (93%), followed by European (3%) and African nationals (2%). Most of the victims are adults.
Suspects:
In 2023, 33,000 people were implicated in burglaries or attempted burglaries of homes, an increase compared to 2021 and 2020 (32,300 and 31,100 respectively). Among them, 91% are men, and 64% are aged between 13 and 29. Nearly a quarter of the suspects are under 18. The proportion of 13-29 year-olds among those implicated (64%) is more than three times higher than their share in the French population (20%).
Nationality of suspects:
62% of those implicated in burglaries are French nationals, 18% are from African countries, and 13% are from European countries. These figures contrast with the general population, where African nationals represent 3.5% and Europeans 3% of the total population in France.
